Seven Get Life Imprisonment for Murder of Trinamool Leader in Hooghly

Kolkata, July 29, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A district court in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Wednesday sentenced seven convicts to life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of local Trinamool Congress leader Dilip Ram near Bandel railway station.

The seven accused were convicted on Tuesday by the Sessions Court at Chinsurah in connection with the killing that took place on June 29, 2019. The court awarded life sentences to Mohammad Nasim alias Guddu, Saddam Hossain, Mangal Yadav, Baijnath Roy alias Hedek, Mohammad Akbar, Mohammad Shanu and Mohammad Manu.

All seven convicts have been sent to judicial custody.

Public Prosecutor Shankar Gangopadhyay said the chargesheet in the case was filed within 90 days by the investigating officer Pradeep Da. He said statements of 39 witnesses were recorded during the investigation and the prosecution established the conspiracy behind the murder.

According to the prosecution, four eyewitness accounts were examined and forensic evidence, including the matching of the bullet recovered from Dilip Ram’s head with the firearm seized from the accused, played a key role in proving the case.

The murder was allegedly linked to a land dispute involving Dilip Ram and local drug mafia figure Samundri Yadav alias Sakuntala Devi. The prosecution claimed that contract killers were hired to eliminate the Trinamool leader and were paid Rs 3 lakh for carrying out the crime.

Dilip Ram, who worked at the railway office in Naihati, was allegedly tracked by the assailants for several days. On June 29, 2019, he was shot dead while boarding a train near the railway tracks at Bandel station.

Reacting to the court verdict, Dilip Ram’s wife Nitu said she would have preferred a death sentence for the convicts but expressed satisfaction with the police investigation and the prosecution’s efforts.

She also pointed out that the alleged main accused, Sakuntala Devi and her son, are still absconding. The prosecution said a chargesheet has already been filed against them and proceedings will begin after their arrest.
