Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha J.P. Nadda on Wednesday said that students choosing activism must be prepared to face police action, triggering a sharp reaction from Opposition members during a heated debate over the alleged entry of Delhi Police personnel into the CPI(M) office.
The remarks came after CPI(M) MP John Brittas raised the issue of police officials allegedly entering the party’s national headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday while attempting to arrest student leader Aishe Ghosh, a former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union.
Raising the matter in the Rajya Sabha, Brittas said police personnel had entered the office of a national political party to arrest Ghosh over her alleged involvement in a student protest at Jantar Mantar. He questioned the manner in which the action was carried out and sought a response from the Home Ministry.
Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge supported the concern, describing the incident as “very shameful” and demanding action against the police personnel involved. Opposition members continued raising slogans in the House, seeking accountability over the matter.
Responding to the allegations, Nadda said police action was part of routine law-and-order procedures. Recalling his own experience as a student leader during the Emergency period, he said he had also faced arrests while participating in activism.
“It is normal law and order activity which the police have to take,” Nadda said, adding that any student who chooses activism should be prepared to face such consequences.
His remarks led to further disruptions in the House, with Opposition members raising slogans and preventing normal proceedings. When BJP MP Rajib Bhattacharjee attempted to make a statement, the protests continued.
Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan later adjourned proceedings till noon.
Earlier in the day, several ministers laid papers and reports before the House, including documents from the Ministries of Education, Home Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Social Justice and Empowerment, and Women and Child Development.
