Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Goyal and Ghanaur MLA Gurlal Ghanaur on Wednesday inaugurated canal irrigation projects worth ₹26.73 crore, bringing water supply facilities to farmers in 42 villages of the constituency through a lift irrigation system.
The projects will bring 16,932 acres of agricultural land under canal irrigation, helping farmers reduce dependence on groundwater and lower irrigation costs.
Barinder Goyal said the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has fulfilled a long-pending demand of villages that remained deprived of canal irrigation despite being located near existing water channels.
As part of the initiative, a 36.39-km underground pipeline network has been laid at a cost of ₹22.23 crore. The project will benefit 38 villages and provide canal irrigation facilities to 15,129 acres of land for the first time.
In another project, a 2.44-km stretch of the Ghadam Rajbaha has been concreted at a cost of ₹4.50 crore, extending irrigation benefits to 1,803 acres across four villages.
Addressing the media, Goyal said the state government has spent ₹450 crore on flood protection works across Punjab. He added that ₹13 crore has been allocated for strengthening flood protection measures along the Ghaggar River in the Ghanaur constituency.
MLA Gurlal Ghanaur thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for initiating development projects in the constituency and said the lift irrigation system would help conserve groundwater while reducing the financial burden on farmers.
Farmers present during the inauguration expressed gratitude to the state government, saying their long-standing demand for regular canal irrigation had finally been addressed.
