Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated Harjinder Kaur and Gulveer Singh after the two athletes won silver medals for India at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, praising their outstanding performances on the international stage.
Harjinder Kaur claimed the silver medal in the women’s 69kg weightlifting event with a combined lift of 227kg, including 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk. The performance also marked a personal best for the Indian weightlifter.
Congratulating her in a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Congratulations to Harjinder Kaur for winning a silver in the Women’s 69 kg event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Also noteworthy is the fact that her performance yesterday was a personal best. It is gladdening to see our weightlifters perform so well in the Games. My best wishes to Harjinder for her future endeavours.”
Modi also hailed long-distance runner Gulveer Singh, who created history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m event.
In another post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Gulveer shines in Glasgow! Congrats to him for winning a Silver in the Men’s 10,000m event. His commitment and dedication are commendable. All the best to him for the endeavours ahead.”
Gulveer clocked 27:49.78 in challenging rain-soaked conditions to finish second behind Australia’s Ky Robinson. He stayed with the leading pack throughout the race before producing a strong finish to secure the historic silver medal.
The two silver medals took India’s overall tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 to 12, with Harjinder strengthening the country’s weightlifting success and Gulveer scripting a milestone for Indian athletics.
