Indian boxer Sakshi secured a medal for the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after defeating Northern Ireland’s Caitlin Fryers in the women’s 51kg quarterfinal on Wednesday, but the young pugilist has already set her sights on upgrading the colour of her medal to gold.
Making her Commonwealth Games debut, Sakshi delivered a commanding performance to beat Fryers by a unanimous 5-0 decision and book her place in the semifinals. The victory guaranteed India another boxing medal at the Games, where both losing semifinalists are awarded bronze medals.
“This victory was very important for me because with this, my medal has been confirmed. This is my first Commonwealth Games so I am feeling very good. Because of the hard work I did and the support from everyone, I was able to confirm my medal today. Now I will try to do better and change the colour of the medal to gold,” Sakshi told IANS after the bout.
Sakshi dominated the contest from the beginning, maintaining control through effective movement, precise punches and strong distance management. She won all three rounds on the judges’ scorecards, with four judges awarding her a 29-27 scoreline and another giving her a 29-25 verdict. Fryers also lost a point after receiving a penalty during the bout.
The Indian boxer said her strategy of maintaining a long-range game worked effectively against her opponent and helped her secure the semifinal berth.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to the whole of India. I would like to dedicate it to everyone who supported me to reach this far. My strategy was to play my long-range game and I was successful in that,” she said.
With a podium finish already secured, Sakshi will now aim to continue her impressive run and compete for the gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
