Hockey India on Wednesday announced a 20-member Indian men’s hockey squad for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with experienced defender Harmanpreet Singh retaining the captaincy as the defending champions prepare to defend their continental title.
The Asian Games will be held from September 19 to October 4, with the tournament champion earning direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh, India’s most-capped men’s hockey player, has been included in the squad, bringing valuable experience to a team that blends seasoned internationals with emerging talent. India had won the gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023 under Harmanpreet’s leadership.
The goalkeeping duties will be handled by Mohith HS and Suraj Karkera. The defensive line comprises Jarmanpreet Singh, captain Harmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Jugraj Singh, Sanjay, Sumit and Yashdeep Siwach.
The midfield features Rajinder Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Nilakanta Sharma and Vivek Sagar Prasad, while the forward unit includes Dilpreet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Sukhjeet Singh, Mandeep Singh and Abhishek.
India have been placed in Pool A alongside hosts Japan, Korea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
Announcing the squad, chief coach Craig Fulton said the team was focused on defending its title and securing Olympic qualification.
“The Indian squad selected for the Asian Games is very experienced. We look forward to the challenge of playing in Japan where the winner qualifies for the LA 2028 Olympics, and that is the ultimate goal for us as a team and as a nation,” Fulton said.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh expressed confidence in the squad, urging both senior and young players to play with freedom while fulfilling their responsibilities.
“I have complete faith in every player to make the most of the opportunities they receive. The focus is to stay free from pressure, enjoy the game and understand our responsibilities,” he said.
All matches of the men’s hockey competition will be played at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara. India will begin their campaign against Indonesia on September 20, followed by league matches against Sri Lanka (September 22), Korea (September 24), Japan (September 26) and Bangladesh (September 28).
