President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday congratulated long-distance runner Gulveer Singh and weightlifter Harjinder Kaur for their silver medal-winning performances at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, describing their achievements as a matter of pride for the nation.
In a message shared on social media, the President praised Gulveer Singh for scripting history by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the men’s 10,000m event at the Commonwealth Games.
Gulveer produced a strong finish in the race, accelerating in the final lap to clock 27:49.78 and secure the silver medal, marking his maiden Commonwealth Games podium finish.
Congratulating the athlete, President Murmu said his achievement had brought honour to the country and wished him continued success in future competitions.
The President also applauded weightlifter Harjinder Kaur after she claimed the silver medal in the women’s 69kg category with a combined lift of 227kg. Harjinder lifted 101kg in the snatch before registering a best effort of 126kg in the clean and jerk. Her successful final lift ensured a second-place finish and added another medal to India’s tally in Glasgow.
In her message, President Murmu commended Harjinder’s spirited performance and expressed confidence that she would continue to achieve greater success in the years ahead.
Harjinder’s medal took India’s weightlifting haul at the Games to seven. Mirabai Chanu has won the country’s lone gold medal in the discipline, while Rishikanta Singh Chanambam, Raja Muthupandi, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Gyaneshwari Yadav and Harjinder Kaur have secured silver medals. Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam has contributed the lone bronze medal in weightlifting so far.
India’s strong showing in weightlifting has emerged as one of the highlights of its campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
