Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal on Wednesday inaugurated a series of canal irrigation development projects at village Sondha in the Fatehgarh Sahib Assembly constituency, highlighting the state government’s continued focus on strengthening irrigation infrastructure and reducing dependence on groundwater.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, the Cabinet Minister said the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has taken significant steps to promote groundwater conservation by ensuring greater availability of canal water to farmers across the state.
Later, speaking to mediapersons, Goyal said canal lining and strengthening works on the Saidpura Minor, Rajindergarh Minor and 1-L Rajbaha have been completed over a total length of 33.68 kilometres in the constituency. In addition, 23.05 kilometres of underground pipelines have been laid under projects executed at a total cost of ₹30.71 crore.
The Minister said another project worth ₹3.75 crore is underway to lay underground pipelines for supplying canal water to villages including Sanipur, Barha, Chhaleri Kalan, Saifalpur, Muhammadipur, Adampur, Bibipur and Sarana. The project is expected to benefit around 2,332 acres of agricultural land and is likely to be completed soon.
Highlighting the government’s irrigation initiatives, Goyal said only 26 per cent of canal water reached farmers’ fields during previous administrations. He claimed that the present government has invested ₹7,500 crore to strengthen the canal irrigation network, resulting in canal water coverage being extended to 86 per cent of villages across Punjab.
He said the government is implementing large-scale works to ensure canal water reaches every agricultural field in the state. According to the Minister, an expanded canal network will not only lower irrigation costs for farmers but also contribute significantly to the conservation of groundwater for future generations.
Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Advocate Lakhbir Singh Rai, who was present on the occasion, expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal for undertaking the irrigation projects in the constituency. He said the works would greatly benefit farmers and provide a major boost to agricultural activities in the region.
The MLA added that the state government had addressed the long-pending demand of local farmers for improved canal water supply by taking concrete steps to ensure irrigation water reaches their fields.
