Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), alleging that it had gained control over India’s education system and was preventing students from thinking independently by promoting ideological conformity.
Speaking during the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Gandhi claimed that the country’s education system had become increasingly privatised and accused the RSS of exercising decisive influence over educational institutions and policymaking.
Describing the existing system as “cruel” and “exploitative,” Gandhi alleged that the “soul” of the education system had been “captured” by the RSS. He also targeted Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, claiming that the minister was merely a symbolic figure and that key decisions were being influenced by the RSS through officials associated with the ministry.
According to Gandhi, students were being denied the freedom to pursue their interests, ask questions, and think independently. He alleged that they were instead being compelled to accept what he described as a distorted version of history promoted by the RSS.
The Congress leader further claimed that vice-chancellors of universities across the country were affiliated with the RSS, alleging that the organisation had become the principal force shaping higher education in India.
Addressing students directly, Gandhi said their “real enemy” was not an individual minister but the RSS, which, he alleged, wanted young people to become “Andhabhakts” (blind followers) rather than independent-minded students.
Referring to ongoing student protests, Gandhi described them as an expression of resistance against attempts to determine the aspirations and future of the country’s youth. He said the movement reflected the determination of students to safeguard their independence and refuse ideological domination.
