Remarks by Karnataka Minister and Congress leader Priyank Kharge on freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Veer Savarkar and Subhas Chandra Bose have triggered a political controversy, with BJP and JD(U) leaders accusing him of making misleading statements about history.
The controversy began after Kharge, while speaking at an event on Tuesday, alleged that while the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) expressed admiration for Subhas Chandra Bose, Savarkar had encouraged Hindus to join the British Army during the freedom struggle.
His remarks drew criticism from BJP spokesperson Guru Prakash, who questioned Kharge’s interpretation of historical events and asked him to study historical records before making such statements.
“If that is the case, then why did former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi praise Veer Savarkar? Why was Savarkar referred to as ‘Veer’ and described as an asset to the nation?” Prakash said, adding that such remarks were being made due to a lack of facts.
JD(U) MLC and chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar also responded to the controversy, saying political leaders should focus on understanding history rather than using it to create disputes.
Kumar said the contributions of Subhas Chandra Bose to India’s freedom struggle could not be denied and added that leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh and Bose followed different approaches but shared the common objective of achieving independence.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MP Kirti Azad defended Kharge’s comments, alleging that attempts were being made to alter historical narratives. He said Kharge had stated historical facts and supported his remarks.
Samajwadi Party spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chand also backed Kharge, saying the issues raised were part of documented history and involved differing approaches among leaders during the freedom movement.
The exchange has once again brought historical interpretations and the legacy of freedom movement figures into the centre of political debate.
