At least 40 people have reportedly been killed and several others injured in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) during two days of unrest, with rights groups and protest leaders alleging a violent crackdown by Pakistani security forces.
The United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP) on Wednesday claimed that around 40 civilians were killed and several others injured between July 27 and 28 in areas including Rawalakot and Mirpur. The group also alleged that many people were arbitrarily detained during the unrest.
The UKPNP expressed concern over what it described as a continuing pattern of violence, claiming that more than 100 people have been killed since June 5, with hundreds injured and others allegedly subjected to enforced disappearances. The claims could not be independently verified.
Condemning the reported use of force, the group said any excessive or unlawful action against peaceful civilians could amount to serious violations of international human rights law. It urged the United Nations, the European Union and the international community to intervene, protect civilians and support independent investigations into the reported incidents.
Meanwhile, Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) leader Sardar Amman Khan accused Pakistani authorities of carrying out what he termed a “massacre” of protesters. In a post on X, Khan claimed that 38 peaceful demonstrators had been killed in two days and alleged that authorities had responded to public demands with lethal force.
He called for an immediate end to the violence, independent investigations and accountability for those responsible, saying the international community should not ignore the situation.
The protests in PoK have intensified in recent days, with demonstrators raising concerns over governance issues and rights-related matters. The situation remains tense amid allegations of restrictions, including a communications blackout and security measures in affected areas.
