An assistant professor at IIT Kharagpur was found dead inside his campus accommodation on Wednesday, with police suspecting suicide while continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The deceased was identified as Deepak Reddy Pullaguram, 36, who was an assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering Department of the institute. Originally from Hyderabad, he was residing in the IIT Kharagpur residential quarters due to his professional responsibilities.
According to police officials, Deepak was found hanging inside his room at the campus quarters after authorities were alerted that he had not been responding since morning. Around 12:30 p.m., personnel from the Hijli outpost under Kharagpur Town police station reached the spot and entered the room with assistance from security guards.
He was immediately taken to B.C. Roy Hospital located inside the IIT Kharagpur campus, where doctors declared him dead.
The police have launched an inquiry to determine whether the death was a case of suicide or involved any other circumstances. The room has been sealed and investigators are examining available evidence. It is yet to be confirmed whether any suicide note was recovered.
West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Papiya Sultana said the body would be sent for post-mortem examination and that the exact cause and manner of death were being investigated.
Investigators are questioning security personnel, fellow residents of the campus quarters and Deepak’s colleagues as part of the probe. His family members in Hyderabad have been informed about the incident.
The police are also looking into whether any personal or professional issues may have contributed to the incident. IIT Kharagpur authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the professor’s death so far.
The incident has drawn attention as cases involving student suicides have been reported at the institute in recent years, but the death of a faculty member on campus is considered an unusual occurrence.
