Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday backed the recent youth-led protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over alleged irregularities in examinations, saying the demonstrations represented the aspirations and concerns of the country’s younger generation.
Participating in the discussion on The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Gandhi said political parties across the spectrum should respect the views expressed by young protesters.
“I was very excited and reassured by what the future of this country did on our streets. This was not anger, violence or hatred, but an expression of the future generation of this country,” Gandhi said.
He added that members of all political parties, including those from the ruling BJP, should acknowledge the sentiments expressed by the students. Gandhi said the protests should make every Indian proud and claimed that even young members of BJP leaders’ families would understand the concerns raised by their peers.
Recalling his interaction with students during the Jantar Mantar demonstrations, Gandhi shared an exchange with a student who described the meaning of being a “student”.
According to Gandhi, the student said a learner is someone with an open mind and heart who accepts that knowledge evolves continuously and understands that new information can challenge existing understanding.
Gandhi contrasted this with what he described as people who believe they already know everything and refuse to listen to others. Recalling the student’s response, he said she referred to such individuals as “idiots”.
The remarks came during a parliamentary debate on amendments aimed at strengthening measures against unfair practices in public examinations, amid political discussions over recent student protests and concerns related to examination integrity.
