Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday alleged that the Centre was attempting to prevent the proposed National Town Hall Against E-20, scheduled to be held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi on August 1, by using the police to create obstacles for the organisers.
Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal claimed that although the Constitution Club had confirmed the booking for the event after receiving the requisite payment, police officials allegedly approached the venue management seeking cancellation of the booking.
According to Kejriwal, when the club declined to cancel the reservation, the organisers were asked to obtain police permission for the event.
He maintained that no permission is required for indoor programmes and questioned the basis for the police’s alleged demand.
“The National Town Hall Against E-20 will be held at the Constitution Club on August 1 at 12 noon as scheduled,” Kejriwal said, alleging that the government was trying to stop the programme despite all booking formalities having been completed.
The former Delhi Chief Minister further alleged that the move reflected the Centre’s discomfort with the campaign against the E-20 policy.
Claiming that attempts to pressure the organisers would not succeed, Kejriwal said people were not intimidated by such actions and asserted that the proposed event would proceed as planned.
Reiterating the AAP’s opposition to the E-20 policy, Kejriwal demanded its withdrawal.
“The Prime Minister will have to withdraw E-20. He should do it peacefully. Otherwise, people will force its withdrawal,” he said.
The AAP has announced that the National Town Hall Against E-20 will bring together stakeholders and members of the public to discuss the policy and its impact.
There was no immediate response from the Delhi Police or the Central government to Kejriwal’s allegations.
