High drama unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju demanded an apology from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for alleging that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had authorised the use of force, including pellet firing, against protesting students in the national capital.
The confrontation took place during a marathon debate on the anti-paper leak bill, with the House witnessing repeated disruptions and heated exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches.
Participating in the debate, Rahul Gandhi criticised the government over its handling of student protests and alleged police action. Referring to the crackdown, he claimed that the Home Minister had authorised the firing on students, saying pellets had been used against them.
The remarks triggered strong protests from BJP members, who termed the allegations baseless and demanded that Gandhi withdraw his statement.
Responding on behalf of the government, Kiren Rijiju questioned the basis of the Congress leader’s allegations and urged him to either substantiate his claims with evidence or apologise to the House.
“You are the Leader of Opposition. On what basis are you making such allegations? Who told you this? Such claims cannot be made without evidence,” Rijiju said, while requesting the Speaker to expunge the remarks from the official records.
He further asserted that accusing the Home Minister of ordering firing without proof amounted to a serious allegation and described it as a “breach of position and privilege.” Rijiju reiterated that Gandhi should apologise on the floor of the House.
During the exchange, Gandhi maintained that any such police action could only have been authorised by the Home Minister, prompting fresh protests from the treasury benches.
As slogan-shouting and verbal sparring intensified, the Speaker adjourned the proceedings for half an hour to restore order.
