With the deadline for filing income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026-27 approaching, the Income Tax Department has advised taxpayers to complete their submissions without delay and avoid last-minute difficulties.
The deadline for filing ITR-1 and ITR-2 for the financial year 2025-26 is July 31, 2026. In a social media post on X, the department cautioned taxpayers against waiting until the final day, highlighting that postponing the process could lead to technical issues and unnecessary stress.
The tax authority urged eligible taxpayers to reconcile their financial documents and file their returns at the earliest.
“‘I’ll Do It Tomorrow’ often turns into deadline-day panic. Don’t wait for July 31, 2026 to file your ITR-1 & ITR-2 for AY 2026-27. Reconcile your documents and file ITR-1 & ITR-2 for AY 2026–27 today!” the department said in its advisory.
The department also asked taxpayers to verify the details mentioned in their returns by matching information from Form 16, Annual Information Statement (AIS), Form 26AS, bank statements and other income records.
The advisory comes after the Income Tax Department announced that more than four crore returns had already been filed for AY 2026-27 and appealed to remaining taxpayers to complete the process before the due date.
During the financial year 2024-25, over nine crore taxpayers filed income tax returns as of March 31, 2025. Of these, 8.64 crore returns were e-verified, while the department issued refunds amounting to Rs 4,35,008 crore during the same period.
Earlier, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had notified revised ITR forms for AY 2026-27, incorporating updated disclosure requirements related to long-term capital gains, share buyback losses and certain trading transactions.
