A police complaint has been filed against Bengali actor and former Trinamool Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty, accusing him of cheating a businessman of ₹68 lakh, criminal breach of trust and issuing death threats.
The complaint was lodged on Wednesday at Charu Market Police Station in south Kolkata by Sheikh Shahid Imam, a resident of Arambagh in Hooghly district and owner of Sonam Movies.
Speaking to reporters after filing the complaint, Shahid alleged that he had invested ₹68 lakh in 2021 for the production of a film that was initially titled Manikjor and was later released as Paka Dekha. He claimed the film was released in theatres and generated revenue, but he was never paid his agreed share of the profits.
According to the complainant, repeated requests for payment were met with assurances that the money would be paid later. He further alleged that Soham Chakraborty’s assistant, Arghya Chatterjee, threatened him with dire consequences when he demanded his money during a meeting at a Kolkata mall.
Shahid also alleged that when he directly approached Soham Chakraborty, the actor refused to return the money despite the film’s satellite and other rights having reportedly been sold.
There was no immediate official response from Soham Chakraborty to the allegations.
This is the second such complaint against the actor in recent months. In June, another businessman, Kaushik Karmakar, accused Chakraborty of taking over ₹1 crore for a proposed film project through Soham Entertainment. Karmakar had also alleged that the promised film was never made and that he was threatened when he sought the return of his investment.
The allegations against Soham Chakraborty are yet to be independently verified, and the police are expected to examine the complaint in accordance with law.
