An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur professor has been booked by the Kalyanpur Police following allegations of domestic violence, physical assault, mental harassment and marital cruelty made by his wife, who is also a faculty member at the institute.
According to the complaint, the woman, an assistant professor at IIT Kanpur, married Professor Nishith Srivastava in December 2012. The couple has two minor children. She alleged that she and her children have been living under constant fear and mental distress for several months due to her husband’s alleged conduct.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that her husband was involved in a relationship with a married PhD scholar working under his supervision in 2022. She further claimed that since November 2025, he has been in another alleged inappropriate relationship with a female professor.
The complainant alleged that when she objected to these relationships, her husband became increasingly aggressive and pressured her to remain silent and accept the situation.
She also accused him of physical violence and intimidation. According to the complaint, on November 11, 2025, he allegedly damaged household items, threw belongings and destroyed their children’s books during an argument. She further alleged that he threatened her with a kitchen knife during the incident.
The complaint also refers to an alleged assault on January 15, 2026, during which the woman claimed she sustained injuries to her eye, ear and head after confronting her husband over the alleged relationship.
She further alleged that on July 5, 2026, her husband attempted to enter the house against her wishes, prompting her to seek assistance from security personnel, leading to another dispute.
The complainant also claimed that CCTV cameras installed at the residence were being used to continuously monitor her and her children’s movements.
As part of her complaint, she submitted photographs of her alleged injuries, CCTV-related records, emails sent to the institute’s security department and copies of complaints previously submitted to the IIT Kanpur police outpost and other authorities.
She has sought legal action against her husband and protection for herself and her children.
Based on the complaint, the Kalyanpur Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. Police said the allegations are under investigation and have not been independently verified.
