Panthic Legend Jathedar Mohan Singh Tur: Special on Death Anniversary July 30 – by Ajaypal Singh Brar

Jathedar Mohan Singh Tur was a saintly statesman, deeply devoted to the Sikh Panth, whose life reflected unwavering integrity, fearless conviction, and complete harmony between his words and actions. He was born in 1915 in Village Tur, Tarn Taran district, to Jathedar Jagat Singh, a respected Numberdar, and his mother, Pal Kaur.

The spirit of sacrifice and dedication to the Sikh Panth was instilled in him from childhood. His father had led the historic Jaito Morcha, bravely challenged British rule, and even endured bullet injuries during the struggle, yet emerged victorious. Inspired by this legacy, Mohan Singh Tur dedicated his life to the service of the Panth from a young age.

Recognizing his commitment and leadership, the Shiromani Akali Dal appointed him Jathedar of the Sarhali Circle during his youth. He played an active and key role in the Punjabi Suba movement. Unable to tolerate his growing popularity, the then Congress government registered as many as 52 criminal cases against him, imprisoned him, and subjected him to severe physical torture.

During this period, the Shiromani Akali Dal fielded him as its candidate against the then Chief Minister of Punjab, Partap Singh Kairon, in the Punjab Legislative Assembly elections. It is learnt that Jathedar Tur had secured a decisive lead, but the government allegedly manipulated the result and declared Partap Singh Kairon victorious by a margin of just 34 votes. Following the election, his home and belongings were auctioned by the authorities in an attempt to break his resolve. Despite these hardships, he remained steadfast and unshaken.

In recognition of his unwavering commitment to the Sikh Panth, he was appointed Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest seat of authority for the Sikh Panth. He also served as a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.

Impressed by his selfless service and dedication, the General House of the Shiromani Akali Dal elected him President of the party in October 1972. As party president, he successfully united various Panthic factions under one banner, strengthening Sikh political unity.

During the Emergency, which was imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Jathedar Mohan Singh Tur emerged as one of the leading figures of the democratic resistance. Under his leadership, the Akali Dal launched a sustained agitation against the Emergency. After a determined struggle lasting 19 months, the Emergency was eventually withdrawn. The movement not only contributed to the restoration of democracy in India but also paved the way for the formation of the Janata Party government at the Centre. In Punjab, owing to Jathedar Tur’s farsighted leadership, a coalition government led by the Shiromani Akali Dal and its allies came to power.

Under his presidency, the Shiromani Akali Dal and its alliance partners achieved remarkable electoral success, winning 13 Lok Sabha seats from Punjab. Jathedar Mohan Singh Tur himself was elected to the Lok Sabha after defeating senior Congress leader and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Gurdial Singh Dhillon, from the Tarn Taran parliamentary constituency.

Demonstrating exemplary humility and selflessness, he voluntarily handed over the presidency of the Shiromani Akali Dal to Jathedar Jagdev Singh Talwandi, setting a lasting example of sacrifice and organizational discipline.

Jathedar Mohan Singh Tur passed away on July 30, 1979. Although he departed from this mortal world, he left behind an enduring legacy of Panthic commitment and public service. Inspired by his ideals, members of his family have continued to serve the Sikh Panth through various organizations.

Following in his footsteps, his son, Sardar Lehna Singh Tur, was among the very few Shiromani Akali Dal candidates elected to the Lok Sabha from Punjab in the 1980 general elections. Later, Jathedar Tarlochan Singh Tur also went on to win election to the Lok Sabha on three occasions. His son-in-law, Jathedar Sucha Singh Chhotepur, served with distinction as a legislator and Cabinet Minister while remaining committed to Panthic values. His grandson, Amarinder Singh Tur, continues to serve through the Panthic organization Misl Satluj.

The truest tribute to Jathedar Mohan Singh Tur would be for the entire Sikh Panth to unite with a common purpose, safeguarding the future of the Sikh community and collectively finding lasting solutions to the challenges confronting Punjab.
