Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Goyal on Wednesday said that canal irrigation facilities have been extended to 79 villages of Sanaur constituency, covering 96,598 acres of agricultural land, after the completion of major canal lining works.
Goyal, along with Sanaur Constituency In-charge Ranjodh Singh Hadana, inaugurated canal lining projects worth ₹68 crore at village Hadana. The project includes 106.72 kilometres of lining work on five distributaries and minors, aimed at ensuring smooth water supply to farmers, including those in tail-end areas. MLA Gurlal Ghanaur was also present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Barinder Goyal said the Punjab Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is working towards expanding canal irrigation facilities across the state to conserve groundwater and provide reliable irrigation support to farmers.
He said the completed works cover the Ghadam Rajbaha System, Fatehpur Minor, Sanaur Rajbaha, Udepur Minor and Balbera Minor. He added that pipeline works spanning 34.78 kilometres at a cost of ₹9 crore are also underway at various outlets of the Balbera and Sanaur Rajbahas, which will bring an additional 2,728 acres under canal irrigation.
The Water Resources Minister said previous governments failed to ensure that canal water reached farmers’ fields, whereas the present government is taking concrete steps to strengthen irrigation infrastructure and improve water availability for agriculture.
Speaking on the occasion, Ranjodh Singh Hadana said the Punjab Government has undertaken development works worth around ₹200 crore in Sanaur constituency. He said the newly completed irrigation projects would help reduce farmers’ expenses, increase crop productivity and ensure that canal water reaches even the last fields of the command area.
