Mayawati Says Paper Leak Crisis Needs Education Reforms Beyond Tougher Laws

Lucknow, July 29, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Wednesday said that stricter laws alone cannot provide a permanent solution to the problem of paper leaks and called for comprehensive reforms in the education sector to address the issue at its roots.

Her remarks came after the Lok Sabha passed a Bill proposing tougher punishment for those involved in paper leak cases. The BSP leader questioned whether increased penalties would be sufficient to prevent such incidents and said several other urgent measures were needed alongside legal action.

In a post on X, Mayawati said, “Lok Sabha has passed stringent penal provisions as a remedy to the menace of paper leaks. Whether such legislation would solve the root problem is a question. Many people view it as a hurried response when several other measures also need to be implemented urgently and strictly.”

She said repeated paper leak incidents had adversely affected the future of thousands of students and, in some cases, pushed young aspirants towards extreme steps, including suicide.

Mayawati argued that the focus should not only be on punishing offenders after a leak occurs but also on creating systems that prevent such crimes. She called for broader education reforms, including affordable and welfare-oriented education loans, improvement in government schools and a complete review of the education system.

The BSP chief said that while financially secure families are often able to provide better educational opportunities to their children, many talented students from economically weaker backgrounds struggle to fulfil their potential despite hard work.

Describing paper leaks as a symptom of deeper issues within the education system, Mayawati said sustained efforts, political commitment and effective implementation of reforms were required to ensure equal opportunities for all sections of society.

She also criticised the parliamentary debate on the anti-paper leak legislation, saying discussions were largely dominated by political allegations rather than meaningful deliberations on finding solutions.

Mayawati questioned whether introducing one law after another could resolve a complex challenge and urged the government to adopt additional measures to protect the future of students.
