The investigation into alleged irregularities involving theft of offerings at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has gained momentum after the formation of a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) following directions from the Supreme Court.
The SIT is preparing to question former trustee of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Dr Anil Mishra, as part of its inquiry. Officials said the process of issuing a notice to record his statement has already begun.
As part of the probe, the SIT has collected statements from bank personnel involved in counting temple offerings. Investigators have also started recording statements of office-bearers associated with the temple trust and are examining banking records, documents and other relevant evidence.
Officials indicated that other trust office-bearers, including Gopal Rao, may also be questioned if required during the course of the investigation.
The Supreme Court, on July 20, directed the constitution of a fresh SIT under the supervision of senior police officers to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter. Following the order, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a three-member SIT headed by Inspector General (IG) Kiran S.
The team includes Ayodhya Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Somen Verma and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Gaurav Grover. Since its formation, the SIT has been gathering evidence and advancing the inquiry into the alleged financial irregularities.
Although the newly formed team has not yet held a formal meeting, police officials said the investigation is proceeding in a systematic manner.
Earlier, on July 26, the Uttar Pradesh government reconstituted the SIT to examine allegations related to irregularities in donations and offerings received at the Ram Temple.
Meanwhile, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, during a special meeting on July 22, deferred the appointment of its first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) by around a month. The Trust also appointed a spokesperson and decided to appoint a full-time General Secretary while reconstituting its religious committee to maintain the traditional practices and sanctity of rituals at the temple complex.
