A political confrontation erupted in Parliament on Wednesday after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had a role in the “opening of fire on student protesters,” prompting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to demand an apology while the Congress defended its leader and sought a clarification from the Home Minister.
The controversy arose during the Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, which was later passed by the House.
Reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks, Union Minister Piyush Goyal accused the Congress leader of making “baseless” and “false” allegations on the floor of the House. He asserted that no firing had taken place and alleged that the Leader of the Opposition had failed to speak on the provisions of the Bill, instead making politically motivated claims.
Goyal said Rahul Gandhi should apologise for what he described as misleading statements, alleging that the Congress leader was misusing Parliament by levelling unsubstantiated accusations against the Union Home Minister.
Union Minister of State and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra also criticised Rahul Gandhi, describing his conduct as “anarchist” and accusing him of using unparliamentary language despite repeated interventions by the Speaker. He said Gandhi should either apologise or produce evidence to support his allegations against Amit Shah.
The Congress, however, stood by Rahul Gandhi’s remarks and shifted the focus to the role of the Home Ministry in policing the national capital.
Congress MP K.C. Venugopal said the Delhi Police functions under the Union Home Ministry, making the Home Minister accountable for its actions. He questioned Amit Shah’s absence from the House during the debate and said the Home Minister should personally clarify whether he had issued any directions related to the alleged firing.
Venugopal also rejected the NDA’s demand for an apology, instead calling on the government to apologise to students and the nation over the alleged use of pellet guns against protesters.
The exchange added to the heated political atmosphere in Parliament, with both the ruling alliance and the Opposition trading sharp accusations over the issue.
