Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Wednesday rejected Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s allegation that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had ordered action against protesting students, saying that no minister has the authority to issue such directions and that such decisions are taken by administrative officials.
Speaking during the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha, Singh criticised Gandhi’s remarks against the government and accused the Opposition of politicising an issue related to examination reforms.
Singh said the legislation was introduced with the aim of ensuring fairness and transparency in public examinations and alleged that Opposition members were not contributing constructively to the discussion.
Reacting to Gandhi’s conduct in the House, the Union Minister said the language used by the Leader of Opposition was inappropriate and did not reflect the dignity associated with the post.
Referring to Gandhi’s allegation against Amit Shah, Singh said the Congress leader had failed to provide any evidence to support his claim that the Home Minister had ordered action against students.
“When Rahul Gandhi claims that Amit Shah ordered action against students, he has failed to provide any evidence to support the allegation. For basic information, no minister can issue such orders. Such decisions are taken by a magistrate, District Magistrate (DM), or Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM),” Singh said.
The minister also rejected Gandhi’s other claims, saying there was no firing during the protest and that only tear gas was used. He further questioned allegations regarding the Home Minister’s travel and security arrangements, saying statements made without facts or evidence were not expected from the Leader of Opposition.
The remarks came during the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, which was passed by the Lok Sabha amid sharp exchanges between the government and Opposition benches.
