Thirty-nine Amarnath Yatra pilgrims were injured after a bus carrying them skidded off the road in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday, prompting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to express concern and direct authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured.
The accident occurred in the Hariganiwan area of Gund in Kangan when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid into a gorge. The pilgrims were returning to Srinagar after paying obeisance at the holy Amarnath cave shrine.
A joint rescue operation was launched immediately by the Gund Police under the supervision of Station House Officer (SHO) Rayees Ahmad, with assistance from personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the 118 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 2 Assam Rifles, 21 Rashtriya Rifles, Yatra Police and local residents.
All the injured pilgrims were rescued from the accident site and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep concern over the incident and directed officials to ensure that the injured receive the best available medical care. He also deputed Health Minister Sakina Itoo to visit the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) and oversee the treatment of the injured pilgrims.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said he spoke with the Deputy Commissioner of Ganderbal and health officials to enquire about the condition of the injured.
He said all 39 pilgrims were undergoing treatment at SKIMS and directed the health authorities to provide every possible assistance and the best medical care. The Lieutenant Governor also prayed for their speedy recovery.
Officials said the injured pilgrims belong to Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. Their condition is being closely monitored, and police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
