Two teenage brothers lost their lives while their mother was injured after a landslide triggered by incessant monsoon rains struck their rented house in Nagaland’s Mokokchung town shortly after midnight on Wednesday.
According to officials of the State Disaster Management Department, the incident occurred around 12.40 a.m. in Upper Penli Ward when a hillside collapsed onto the family’s residence.
The victims were identified as Muwalong Sangtam (19), a Class XII student, and Thridiba Sangtam (16), a Class XI student. Both were studying at Queen Mary Higher Secondary School in Mokokchung.
Their mother sustained injuries in the incident and is undergoing treatment at Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital in Mokokchung.
Local residents said continuous rainfall through the night triggered the landslide, which extensively damaged the rented house where the family had been living.
The bodies of the two brothers were later taken to their native village, Alisophur, in Tuensang district. Villagers, family members, community leaders and members of the Sangtam community gathered to receive the mortal remains and pay their final respects before the brothers were laid to rest.
The tragedy comes as Nagaland continues to grapple with widespread disruption caused by heavy monsoon rains over the past week. Persistent rainfall has triggered landslides, damaged road infrastructure and inundated several areas, severely affecting connectivity across multiple districts.
Officials said road links to several districts remain disrupted due to landslides and flooding. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority has intensified relief efforts, while the Indian Air Force, in coordination with the state government, has evacuated more than 300 stranded people and airlifted essential supplies to remote areas cut off by damaged roads.
Authorities have also deployed a state government helicopter to support evacuation and relief operations in inaccessible regions.
