Punjab Govt Directs Education, Power Departments to Expedite Employee Demands: Harpal Cheema

Chandigarh, July 29, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Wednesday directed the Education and Power departments to speed up the resolution of employee-related issues, including recruitment, regularisation and service matters.

Cheema, who is also chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee constituted to address employee concerns, held detailed meetings with representatives of seven unions from the Education Department and two unions from the Power Department. He instructed officials to ensure that pending issues are reviewed through the designated officers’ and finance committees and concrete proposals are prepared for early resolution.

During discussions with education sector unions, attended by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, Cheema reviewed the demands of the 3704 Teacher Union. He directed the high-level committee constituted on July 9, comprising officials from the Finance Department, Personnel Department, School Education Department, Office of the Advocate General and union representatives, to submit its recommendations at the earliest.

Addressing concerns raised by the ETT TET Pass Teachers Association, Cheema asked Finance and Education Department officials to hold an immediate meeting with union representatives and prepare proposals for resolving genuine grievances.

The minister also directed the School Education Department to expedite action on the demands raised by the United Physical Education Union and the Murh Bahal Kachhe Adhiyapak Union.

On the issue of recruitment of 250 Art and Craft teacher posts, Cheema said the state government was working towards an effective solution and urged union representatives to submit a common memorandum of demands to ensure a speedy resolution.

During discussions with PSPCL and PSTCL contractual workers, Cheema said the government’s initiative to bring outsourced employees under direct departmental contracts would address several operational issues.

He also directed Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) authorities to sympathetically examine the demands of the Powercom Outsource Spot Billing Meter Reader Union and initiate appropriate action.

The meetings were attended by representatives of various employee organisations from the education and power sectors, who placed their demands before the Cabinet Sub-Committee.
