Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday demanded the removal of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and called for a Supreme Court-monitored independent investigation into the alleged police crackdown on students during the July 20 protest march towards Parliament.
Addressing a press conference, the Congress leader alleged that the Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), which function under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, used excessive force against protesters, including pellet guns and baton charges.
Holding the Home Minister accountable, Gandhi said there were only two possibilities. “Either the Home Minister ordered the action or he was unaware of it. If he ordered it, he is culpable. If he did not know, then he is incompetent. In either case, he has to go,” he said.
Referring to the alleged police action during the demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, Gandhi claimed that students participating in the protest were subjected to excessive force while raising questions before the government.
He said he had written to Amit Shah on July 25 seeking clarification on whether the use of pellet guns had been authorised during the protest, but had not received any response.
The Congress MP also accused the Central government of attempting to suppress dissent. He alleged that he was prevented from speaking in the Lok Sabha and was asked to apologise for his remarks against the Home Minister.
“I will never apologise to the BJP-RSS,” Gandhi said, asserting that it was his responsibility to raise issues concerning students.
He further claimed that the Opposition had collected photographs and video footage identifying police personnel allegedly involved in the crackdown. Gandhi also questioned the presence of individuals in plain clothes during the operation and sought an inquiry into their role.
Demanding an impartial investigation, Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to order a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the incident and ensure accountability for the alleged use of force against the protesters.
