British Kashmiris staged a protest outside the Pakistan Consulate in Birmingham, expressing solidarity with the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and condemning the reported crackdown by Pakistani security forces in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The demonstration came amid reports of escalating unrest in PoK, where, according to various accounts, at least 40 people have reportedly been killed and dozens injured during security operations over the past two days.
Videos circulating on social media showed protesters placing their shoes outside the Pakistan Consulate as a symbolic gesture of protest. Demonstrators also raised slogans accusing Pakistani security forces of being responsible for the violence and called for the independence of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Reports suggest the unrest has spread across several areas, including Rawalakot and Mirpur, with some claims indicating that the overall number of deaths and injuries could be significantly higher. However, these figures have not been independently verified.
The developments have also drawn reactions from British lawmakers.
UK MP Naz Shah described the reported firing on peaceful protesters as “barbaric” and called for accountability and a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
“Shooting directly at protesters who were peacefully expressing their political views is barbaric,” Shah said in a post on X, adding that speaking out against the killing of innocent people was “a moral and human duty.”
Another UK MP, Imran Hussain, expressed concern over reports of serious human rights violations in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. In a video message shared on X, he said he would raise the concerns of British Kashmiris with the Pakistani High Commissioner in the UK and urged the British government to pursue diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation and the resumption of dialogue.
Meanwhile, the UK Pakistan National Party (UKPNP) alleged that more than 100 people have been killed since June 5, several hundred injured and many others subjected to enforced disappearances by Pakistani security forces. The organisation urged the United Nations, the European Union and the international community to support independent investigations into the reported incidents and press for adherence to international human rights obligations.
