India’s Ankush Panghal delivered a composed performance under pressure to win the gold medal in the men’s 80kg boxing event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, defeating England’s Shittu Dimeji in the final on Saturday.
Ankush secured a hard-fought 4-1 split decision victory over the home favourite in Glasgow to add another gold medal to India’s record-breaking boxing campaign.
The Indian boxer faced early challenges after losing the opening round on most judges’ scorecards but made a strong comeback in the second and third rounds. His aggressive combinations, accurate counter-attacks and tactical awareness helped him turn the contest in his favour.
Three judges awarded the bout 29-26 to Ankush, while the remaining two judges gave close 28-27 verdicts, with one favouring each boxer.
The victory marked another major achievement for Ankush, who maintained his composure throughout the contest and produced a disciplined display against a strong opponent.
Ankush’s gold was India’s ninth boxing medal at Glasgow 2026, with the country’s boxers collecting seven gold and two silver medals on Saturday. Earlier, Sachin Siwach, Arundhati Choudhary, Priya, Sakshi, Preeti and Jaismine won gold medals, while Lovlina Borgohain and Jadumani Singh secured silver medals.
Sachin had earlier claimed the men’s 60kg gold after edging Namibia’s Tryagain Morni Ndevelo by a narrow 3-2 split decision in the final.
The remarkable boxing performance has strengthened India’s position at the Commonwealth Games, highlighting the country’s growing depth and dominance in the sport.
With additional medals in events such as men’s shot put F57 and judo, India climbed to fourth place in the overall medal standings with 35 medals, including 11 gold, 16 silver and eight bronze.
