Gitanjali Angmo, social entrepreneur and wife of education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk, has called on Bollywood to rediscover its role in shaping society, while praising filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s latest film The Odyssey for its depth and storytelling.
Sharing her thoughts on X, Angmo described watching The Odyssey as a “surreal” experience, recalling an accidental meeting with Nolan in New York in 2024 when the film was still under discussion.
She wrote that the film’s central themes—such as the hero’s journey, dharma, destiny, exile, temptation, homecoming and personal transformation—resonate deeply with the Indian cultural imagination.
Reflecting on India’s rich literary and mythological heritage, Angmo said the country possesses a vast repository of epic narratives that deserve to be brought to the screen with scale, sensitivity and intellectual depth.
She also stressed that cinema has a larger responsibility beyond entertainment, arguing that films help shape public thought and perspectives. In an apparent reference to the Hindi film industry, she remarked that Bollywood should rediscover its role as “one of our most powerful classrooms.”
Her comments come in the backdrop of Sonam Wangchuk’s recent nationwide campaign demanding reforms in India’s examination system following the NEET paper leak controversy. Wangchuk concluded his 26-day hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 23-24 after discussions with Union Ministers, including J.P. Nadda.
The issue also sparked debate within the film fraternity. While actor Omi Vaidya, known for his role as Chatur in 3 Idiots, publicly extended support to Wangchuk, actor Aamir Khan stated during a media interaction that he was not aware of Wangchuk during the making of 3 Idiots, despite long-standing public belief that the film’s protagonist drew inspiration from the activist.
On July 25, Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Union Minister for Education.
