The 2026 Commonwealth Games will conclude on Sunday with a symbolic handover marking the beginning of India’s preparations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Amdavad, the centenary edition of the multi-sport event.
At the closing ceremony at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro, the Commonwealth Games flag and the host baton will be formally passed to representatives of Amdavad, signalling the transition from Scotland to India. The moment marks India’s return as Commonwealth Games host two decades after New Delhi staged the 2010 edition.
The handover comes as India continues to strengthen its standing in international sport. Indian athletes produced an impressive campaign in Glasgow, securing medals across disciplines including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo and para-sports, underlining the country’s growing competitiveness on the global stage.
Preparations for the 2030 Games are already underway. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who attended the Glasgow Games, reviewed key aspects of event management, including venue operations, transport systems, spectator services and overall logistics. During his visit, he also inaugurated the Amdavad Experience Centre and interacted with athletes, officials and Commonwealth delegates as part of India’s host-city preparations.
The 2030 edition will hold special significance as it coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Commonwealth Games, which were first held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. Hosting the landmark edition is expected to provide India with an opportunity to showcase its sporting infrastructure, organisational capabilities, technological advancements and cultural heritage before an international audience.
As part of Sunday’s closing ceremony, Amdavad will be introduced to the Commonwealth through a specially curated cultural presentation celebrating India’s traditions and Gujarat’s identity. Performers including Shankar Mahadevan and Rashmika Mandanna are expected to feature in the showcase.
Sports administrators also view the 2030 Games as an important step in strengthening India’s sporting ecosystem through infrastructure development, expanded grassroots participation and enhanced high-performance programmes. The event is also expected to support India’s broader ambition of hosting future global multi-sport competitions, including the Olympic Games.
With the Glasgow Games drawing to a close, the focus now shifts to Amdavad as India begins its journey towards hosting one of the most significant editions in Commonwealth Games history.
