The bodies of three Afghan nationals who were killed in a brutal attack in Italy earlier this year have been repatriated to Afghanistan, nearly two months after the incident, according to the Taliban’s Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation.
The ministry said the remains arrived in Kabul on July 27 and 28 before being handed over to the victims’ families in Balkh, Kabul and Parwan provinces.
The three Afghans were among four migrants who were killed in June in Amendolara, a town in Italy’s Calabria region. Italian authorities arrested two Pakistani nationals in connection with the incident on suspicion of murder.
According to accounts given by the lone survivor, the victims were attacked after refusing to pay money allegedly demanded by the accused for transportation. The survivor told local media that the attackers poured gasoline into the vehicle carrying the migrants before setting it ablaze.
The Afghan survivor, who escaped by breaking a window of the burning vehicle, described the attack as a horrific ordeal. He alleged that the accused had also threatened migrant workers with knives and firearms and forced them to work under exploitative conditions without wages, while providing only food and accommodation.
Italian investigators have been examining the circumstances surrounding the killings. The charred bodies of the four victims were recovered from a minivan parked near a fuel station along the Ionian State Road 106 in Amendolara.
Following the incident, Afghanistan’s Taliban-led Foreign Ministry condemned the killings and called for a transparent and impartial investigation into the crime.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured that those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice.
The investigation into the killings remains underway.
