Filmmakers Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Kashyap have come together to present Bobby Beauty Parlour, a coming-of-age short film that explores friendship, adolescence and the bittersweet transition into adulthood.
Directed by Shashwat Dwivedi, the film is set to premiere on the Oh Short Flips YouTube channel at midnight on August 6 as part of the platform’s Friendship Week programming. The project has been produced by Janhavi Asthana, Ranjan Singh and Anurag Kashyap.
Reflecting on the film, Imtiaz Ali said its understated storytelling reminded him of his own formative years. He noted that life’s most meaningful moments are often quiet yet leave a lasting impact, adding that the film brought back memories of his small hometown, childhood friendships and the choices that shaped his life.
The story follows childhood friends Eelu and Manu during what may be their final afternoon together. Trapped inside a neighbourhood beauty parlour, the pair spend time talking, arguing, resting and attempting to hold on to a friendship that is gradually being overtaken by life’s changing realities.
For Anurag Kashyap, who recently began curating films for the YouTube channel, Bobby Beauty Parlour stands out for its simplicity and emotional honesty. He described it as a heartfelt story about friendship, aspirations and growing up, while also praising producer Janhavi Asthana for co-writing and filming the project and commending director Shashwat Dwivedi’s creative growth.
Dwivedi said the short film seeks to capture the fragile emotions of childhood that often go unnoticed. Calling the YouTube release particularly meaningful, he said the platform played a significant role in his filmmaking journey and expressed hope that audiences would reconnect with old friendships after watching the film.
The cast includes Adrija Sinha, Parul Rana, Saksham Raj and Preeti Kochar. Producer Ranjan Singh said the award-winning short has already travelled to several international film festivals and is an ideal release for Friendship Week because of its warm and relatable portrayal of companionship and life’s realities.
