IndiGo on Monday announced that its newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Willie Walsh, has officially assumed charge, marking the beginning of a new leadership phase as India’s largest airline pursues accelerated international expansion and long-term strategic growth.
Walsh, the former Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), was appointed as IndiGo’s CEO earlier this year. Bringing more than four decades of experience in the global aviation industry, he will work closely with the airline’s board and management team to strengthen the carrier’s operational capabilities and drive its next phase of expansion.
Welcoming Walsh to the role, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said the airline was entering its third decade with a strong foundation and was well positioned for sustained growth.
He said Walsh’s extensive international experience, coupled with his operational and strategic expertise, would play a key role in advancing IndiGo’s global expansion plans.
Expressing confidence about the future, Walsh said IndiGo had built an extraordinary legacy over the past two decades and had emerged as one of the world’s largest airlines within a relatively short period.
Highlighting India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector, he said the country’s status as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets presents significant opportunities for the airline. He added that it was an exciting time to join IndiGo as it embarks on its next chapter of growth.
As Chief Executive Officer, Walsh will oversee the airline’s overall management and strategic direction. His responsibilities will include expanding IndiGo’s international network, enhancing operational performance, strengthening commercial and network strategies, and improving customer experience.
Walsh is widely regarded as one of the aviation industry’s most experienced leaders. He began his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus before becoming its Chief Executive Officer in 2001. He later served as CEO of British Airways from 2005 to 2011 and subsequently led International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, Iberia and several other airlines, from 2011 to 2020. He most recently served as Director General of IATA, representing the global airline industry.
Meanwhile, shares of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., IndiGo’s parent company, traded higher at Rs 5,381 during morning trade on the National Stock Exchange on Monday.
