Zubair Baloch, brother of notorious gangster Uzair Baloch, was seriously injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire on him in the Lyari area of Karachi, according to police.
The attack took place on Chakiwara Road, where Zubair Baloch was reportedly sitting outside his residence in Singu Lane. Two passersby were also injured in the firing.
Police said Zubair sustained multiple bullet injuries, including gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen, and was rushed for medical treatment.
South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza said the assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack. Investigators are probing the incident from multiple angles, including the possibility of gang rivalry or political enmity.
According to police, Zubair Baloch had been arrested in seven criminal cases in 2012 and was released in 2025.
His brother, Uzair Baloch, has been facing several criminal cases. In March this year, an anti-terrorism court rejected his bail applications in seven cases related to alleged police encounters, murder and possession of explosives.
Meanwhile, official data released earlier by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) highlighted a rise in crime in Karachi during the January-April period this year.
The figures showed that 611 cars and 13,346 motorcycles were either stolen or snatched, while 5,567 mobile phones were reported stolen in street crime incidents. The city also recorded 176 murder cases and 61 incidents of extortion during the same period.
In April alone, 22 cars and 469 motorcycles were snatched, while another 111 cars and 2,723 motorcycles were stolen. Authorities also recorded 1,624 mobile phone snatching incidents and 42 killings during the month.
Separate data from the Police Women and Child Protection Cell revealed that between January and April, at least 388 adults and 10 minors were affected by domestic violence, harassment, abuse and related offences in Karachi.
