In an old appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Smulders joked about the directness often associated with British wit while sharing a personal story involving her mother.
During the conversation, Smulders asked host Graham Norton whether being “cruelly honest” was a distinctly British trait. After Norton agreed, the actress recounted an incident from her high school days when she took part in a production of Singin’ in the Rain.
She explained that although she was not a trained singer, she had been assigned a singing role instead of a speaking part. After completing the opening performance, she felt proud of overcoming the challenge and looked forward to praise from her mother.
Instead, Smulders recalled her mother telling her, “Oh, Cobie, you were so wonderful. You couldn’t sing a note of it, but you just sang it anyway.” The actress laughed while remembering that she still had several performances left after hearing the candid assessment.
