US President Donald Trump has announced that fresh negotiations between the United States and Iran are scheduled to begin on Monday afternoon, saying several Gulf nations have urged Washington to pursue diplomacy instead of military action amid hopes of a broader regional agreement.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while travelling to Joint Base Andrews, Trump said Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar had appealed to the US administration to halt planned strikes against Iran because they believed a negotiated settlement was within reach.
According to Trump, the proposed framework would address both the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme. He also claimed that Iran had requested the United States to suspend military action, prompting Washington to shift its focus toward negotiations.
Earlier in the day, Trump said the United States had agreed to postpone a planned military operation after receiving requests from Iran and several Middle Eastern countries to allow diplomatic efforts to continue. In a post on Truth Social, he said the US military remained fully prepared for action but had chosen to give negotiations an opportunity.
Trump stated that the proposed understanding would involve the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures to eliminate what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat. He added that the suspension of military action would remain contingent on the successful conclusion of an agreement.
A US official also said Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud discussed the situation with Trump during a telephone conversation on Saturday, expressing concern and seeking clarification regarding the proposed military response.
Meanwhile, Pakistan, Qatar, the UAE, Türkiye and several other countries have publicly called on both Washington and Tehran to de-escalate tensions and avoid further conflict through dialogue.
Trump also claimed that Israel supported the decision to prioritise diplomacy at this stage.
