A man was killed and five others, including a teenager, were injured in a shooting in a residential neighbourhood of Portland, Oregon, early Sunday, prompting a homicide investigation as police continued their search for those responsible.
According to a statement issued by local authorities, Portland Police officers from the North Precinct responded to reports of gunfire at around 3:33 a.m. local time in the 5800 block of Northeast Alberta Street.
When officers reached the scene, they found two people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Both victims were taken to hospital by ambulance. Investigators later learned that four additional victims had reached nearby hospitals in private vehicles.
One adult male later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The remaining five victims received medical treatment, and authorities said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. A teenage juvenile is among those injured.
Police said the suspect or suspects fled the area before officers arrived, and no arrests had been made at the time of the latest update.
The Portland Police Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation and appealed to members of the public with relevant information to come forward and submit tips to assist detectives.
The latest incident comes amid a series of recent shooting cases in the United States. On Saturday, at least three people were killed and two others injured in a shooting near an In-N-Out restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Authorities in Twin Falls said the shooting began inside the restaurant before law enforcement responded to what was described as an active shooter incident. Police secured the area and urged residents and visitors to avoid the vicinity while emergency personnel carried out their operations. The circumstances surrounding that incident remain under investigation.
