India officially began its journey towards hosting the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030 as Glasgow concluded the 2026 edition with a vibrant closing ceremony that featured a spectacular cultural showcase highlighting Ahmedabad, the next host city.
The ceremony at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro marked the end of 11 days of competition before the symbolic handover of the Commonwealth Games flag to Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, formally transferring hosting responsibilities to India.
The evening opened with a celebration of Scottish culture through performances by renowned rock band Simple Minds, dance troupe Diversity and other artists before attention shifted to India’s presentation.
India’s 18-minute cultural showcase celebrated the country’s heritage, sporting achievements and vision for the centenary Games. The presentation began with a tribute marking the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram under the theme Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The World is One Family), highlighting India’s message of unity and inclusivity.
An audiovisual segment traced India’s journey in the Commonwealth Games, showcasing landmark achievements and the country’s growing stature in international sport. Another highlight was a musical collaboration between Indian musician Rishab Sharma and Scottish artist Ross Ainslie, symbolising the transition from Glasgow to Ahmedabad through a fusion of Indian and Scottish traditions.
The finale featured performances by acclaimed singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan, Rishab Sharma and Bhoomi Trivedi, with music and choreography offering spectators a preview of the cultural celebrations planned for Ahmedabad 2030.
Indian supporters added to the festive atmosphere, waving the Tricolour as songs including Vande Mataram, Shiv Strot and Suno Gaur Se Duniya Walo echoed across the arena.
Earlier, Commonwealth boxing champion Jaismine Lamboria carried the Indian flag during the traditional Parade of Athletes, which brought together competitors from all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.
The 2030 Commonwealth Games will hold special significance as they mark the 100th anniversary of the event. India will become only the second nation after Australia to host the Commonwealth Games twice, with Ahmedabad set to stage the historic centenary edition.
