Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata has reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to nation-building, stating that businesses should ultimately serve society rather than merely create wealth. Speaking at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore’s flagship alumni leadership conclave, IIMBue 2026, he outlined the philanthropic institution’s future priorities, with a strong emphasis on expanding access to quality healthcare and education.
Reflecting on the values that have guided the Tata Group for generations, Noel Tata said the founders envisioned businesses as instruments to improve the lives of people and contribute to India’s progress. He noted that the objective was never to become the country’s largest business enterprise but to create lasting value for society.
Describing his transition from corporate leadership to philanthropy as a significant change in perspective, Tata observed that the focus shifts from generating wealth to ensuring resources are deployed effectively for public good. He stressed that every rupee spent in the social sector must deliver meaningful and long-term impact.
He said Tata Trusts would continue its long-standing tradition of building institutions that have shaped India’s development, citing organisations such as the Indian Institute of Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Tata Memorial Hospital, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the National Centre for the Performing Arts.
As part of its future healthcare strategy, the Trusts plan to establish several not-for-profit multi-speciality hospitals across the country. The initiative builds on the organisation’s partnership with the Assam government to develop 17 cancer care hospitals. The proposed hospitals will follow a cross-subsidy model, enabling paying patients to support affordable treatment for economically weaker sections without compromising medical standards.
Education will remain another key priority, Tata said, highlighting a proposed undergraduate institution being developed in collaboration with IIM Bangalore. He observed that India requires many more world-class higher education institutions to meet growing demand and reduce the need for talented students to pursue education abroad.
He emphasised that the Trusts’ future initiatives would remain aligned with their founding mission of strengthening India’s social and institutional development.
