A press interaction by Independent Lok Sabha MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, was disrupted on Sunday evening after a man allegedly hurled a slipper at him at his official residence on Pandara Road in New Delhi. The MP later claimed that another individual present at the venue was carrying a knife with the intention of attacking him.
The incident occurred while the Purnia MP was addressing journalists at his official residence in the high-security Lutyens’ Delhi area, triggering a brief commotion.
According to Yadav’s supporters, the person who threw the slipper was identified as Sumit, a resident of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. Following the incident, some supporters of the MP allegedly assaulted him before police intervened and took him into custody.
Sumit reportedly told police that he acted out of anger over what he described as the MP’s alleged disrespectful remarks against saints.
Jaid Khan, Media Convenor for Pappu Yadav, said the disturbance began when a small group started questioning the MP during the press conference. He alleged that one individual suddenly threw a slipper, while another was seen taking out a knife, prompting those present to restrain him.
Khan further claimed that despite the anger among his supporters, Pappu Yadav intervened to prevent further assault on the slipper-thrower and ensured he was handed over to the police.
After the incident, Yadav alleged that he had been receiving threats from anti-social elements since raising the issue of alleged theft of donations linked to Ayodhya. He also claimed that a bounty of up to ₹51 lakh had been announced against him following his statements on the matter.
The episode came a day after a police complaint was reportedly filed against Pappu Yadav, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others in connection with a skit performed on Parliament premises concerning Ram Mandir donations.
Police have detained the accused and are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
