Punjab Approves ₹40 Crore Special Fund to Upgrade Commercial Markets Across State

SAS Nagar, August 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

In a major initiative aimed at improving commercial infrastructure and addressing long-pending demands of the trading community, the Punjab Government has approved a special fund of ₹40 crore for the upgradation of commercial markets across the state.

Welcoming the decision, Punjab State Traders Commission Vice Chairman Anil Thakur thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema for extending dedicated support towards the welfare of traders and the modernisation of market infrastructure.

Thakur said the Punjab State Traders Commission would soon deliberate on key policy matters concerning traders and shopkeepers and work towards strengthening the business ecosystem in the state.

He said the newly sanctioned fund would be utilised to improve essential civic infrastructure in commercial markets, including the construction and renovation of modern public washrooms, repair and development of roads, resolution of electricity-related issues, and other public utility works. These measures, he said, would enhance the overall business environment while benefiting traders as well as consumers.

Highlighting the government’s efforts to establish a structured mechanism for addressing traders’ concerns, Thakur said Punjab has, for the first time, constituted Assembly Constituency-level and District-level Traders Commissions. In addition, the Punjab State Traders Commission, headed by the Finance Minister, has been tasked with engaging directly with the trading community and facilitating the resolution of issues through regular consultations.

According to Thakur, the Assembly Constituency and District-level Traders Commissions have already conducted more than 800 meetings with traders across Punjab. Besides resolving several local issues, these interactions have helped identify broader policy requirements. He said the approval of the ₹40 crore special fund was a direct outcome of repeated demands raised during these meetings for upgrading market infrastructure.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to promoting trade, improving civic amenities and creating modern commercial hubs, Thakur expressed confidence that the initiative would strengthen business activity and provide traders with better infrastructure across Punjab.
