The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police has traced a tailoring shop allegedly owned by Hamim Mondal, a suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) operative arrested from a residential area in Burdwan town of East Burdwan district.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, the shop is located in Pilkhana, a minority-dominated locality in Howrah district adjoining Kolkata. The establishment was reportedly involved in small tailoring-related activities, including preparing and stitching clothing tags.
Investigators, however, suspect that the shop may have served as a contact point for Mondal and his associates, with tailoring work allegedly being used as a cover.
A senior police officer said that Mondal had initially stayed in Pilkhana after arriving in West Bengal and is believed to have set up the shop during that period. He later shifted to New Town on the northern outskirts of Kolkata before moving to Burdwan town, where he was arrested.
The shop is situated in a narrow lane at Alam Mistry Lane in the Pilkhana area. Officials have also learnt that Mondal initially lived in a rented one-room accommodation in a housing complex in the locality.
Meanwhile, Mondal’s father, Moinuddin Mondal, who was reportedly staying with him in Pilkhana, has gone missing following his son’s arrest by the STF.
Local residents described Hamim as a reserved person who rarely interacted with people in the neighbourhood. They said his father was comparatively more familiar with locals, though some residents expressed doubts over whether the person who identified himself as Hamim’s father was actually related to him.
The investigation has also revealed alleged plans involving Mondal and his arrested associate Arpita Sarkar to disrupt a recent protest rally organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
STF Inspector General Gaurav Sharma said there were plans to arrange police uniforms so that the accused could allegedly blend into the crowd while posing as law enforcement personnel and create disruption. He added that it was not yet clear whether the accused reached the protest site or managed to procure the uniforms.
