Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday congratulated Kashmiri mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Owais Yaqoob for his impressive victory at BRAVE Combat Federation (BRAVE CF) 107 in Bulgaria, where he defeated an unbeaten two-time IMMAF World champion.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister’s Office described the achievement as a proud moment for both Jammu and Kashmir and the nation, wishing Yaqoob continued success and many more accomplishments on the international stage.
Yaqoob secured the landmark victory on August 1 at Burgas Arena in Bulgaria by defeating Bulgarian fighter Delyan Georgiev through a first-round technical knockout (TKO). The Kashmiri fighter dominated the contest and finished the bout at the four-minute mark of the opening round.
Georgiev entered the fight with an unbeaten record and was a two-time International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Amateur World Champion. The defeat marked the first loss of his professional career.
Hailing from Murran village in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, Yaqoob displayed composure, technical skill and aggressive intent throughout the contest, earning one of the most significant victories of his professional career on one of the world’s leading MMA platforms.
Following the win, Yaqoob dedicated his achievement to the people of India and Jammu and Kashmir.
“This victory means everything to me. I entered the cage carrying the hopes of my family, the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and the entire country. Defeating an unbeaten world champion is a dream achievement, but this is only the beginning. I will continue working harder and strive for greater success while proudly representing India on the global stage,” he said.
The victory has been widely hailed as a milestone for mixed martial arts in Jammu and Kashmir, with Yaqoob emerging as one of the region’s most accomplished international MMA athletes.
