A political row erupted on Sunday after an FIR was registered against independent MP Pappu Yadav, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad over a skit staged at the Parliament complex on alleged irregularities involving donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
NDA leaders criticised the act, calling it an insult to Parliament and accusing the opposition leaders of hurting religious sentiments, while INDIA bloc leaders defended the protest and questioned the allegations related to temple donations.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya described the act as “cheap, disgusting and criminal”, alleging that several opposition leaders supported an action that insulted Hindus, saints and devotees of Lord Ram. He demanded action against those involved.
JD(U) leader Shyam Rajak said Parliament was not a platform for such performances and argued that any such act should have been conducted elsewhere.
BJP MP Karan Bhushan Singh said insulting Sanatan Dharma was unacceptable and warned opposition parties against hurting religious sentiments. Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi also criticised the opposition, alleging that Hindu traditions, culture and saints were mocked through the act.
JD(U) MLC Neeraj Kumar Singh said no one had the right to target religious beliefs and questioned whether the Congress was moving away from the values mentioned in the Constitution’s Preamble.
Opposition leaders, however, defended Pappu Yadav and rejected the criticism. Congress MP Tariq Anwar said the skit was intended to draw public attention and had no ulterior motive. He alleged that concerns over alleged misuse of Ram Temple donations had prompted public criticism.
Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar questioned the BJP’s claim over saffron symbolism, saying the colour was also part of the national flag.
Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai said Pappu Yadav would respond to the allegations himself, while questioning why issues related to alleged donation theft and land controversies connected with the temple were not being discussed.
The controversy follows the filing of an FIR citing alleged offence against religious sentiments after the Parliament complex demonstration.
