Congress leaders on Monday strongly condemned the alleged attack on Purnia MP Pappu Yadav during a press conference, describing the incident as an attack on democratic values and freedom of expression. They maintained that political disagreements should be resolved through debate and reasoned discussion, not violence.
Senior Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said differences of opinion are an integral part of democracy and should be addressed through dialogue. He remarked that while people may disagree with Pappu Yadav’s views, his opinions deserve to be heard as an elected representative. Tiwari said responses to political statements should come through arguments and facts rather than threats, abuse or physical intimidation.
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat also criticised the incident, stating that such conduct has no place in a democratic society. He said resorting to violence against someone for expressing an opinion amounts to an attack on freedom of expression and urged the government to investigate the matter and take strict action against those responsible.
The controversy stems from an incident at Pappu Yadav’s residence on Sunday during a press conference. According to reports, a confrontation broke out after some individuals allegedly attempted to confront the MP, leading to a scuffle involving his supporters.
The incident followed Yadav’s appearance in a skit at Parliament on July 31, in which he dressed as a priest in saffron robes while raising the issue of alleged theft of Ram Mandir donation funds.
After the confrontation, Pappu Yadav alleged that there had been an attempt on his life and claimed he had received repeated threats. He said one of the alleged attackers had been apprehended and handed over to the police.
The episode has sparked political reactions, with Opposition leaders expressing concern over the safety of public representatives and stressing the importance of safeguarding democratic discourse and freedom of political expression.
