Rajya Sabha MP Vikram Sahney on Sunday announced a major anti-drug awareness campaign in Punjab, stating that five lakh youth across the state will be encouraged to take a pledge against drug abuse as part of the nationwide Nasha Mukt Yuva Abhiyan for Viksit Bharat 2047.
The announcement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually launched the nationwide campaign, which connected more than 21,000 locations and engaged over one crore young people across the country. During the programme, the Prime Minister urged the youth to take an online pledge through the MyBharat portal to remain free from drugs and motivate others to stay away from substance abuse.
Participating in the initiative through his NGO, Sun Foundation, Sahney said around 5,000 young people from Delhi, along with participants from skill development centres and de-addiction centres in Punjab, joined the virtual event.
Sahney said the anti-drug campaign in Punjab would be undertaken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and would seek to mobilise five lakh youth to publicly commit themselves to a drug-free lifestyle while encouraging others to do the same.
Highlighting the work of the Sun Foundation in the field of rehabilitation, Sahney said the organisation currently operates 12 de-addiction and rehabilitation centres across Punjab. He said the centres focus on the holistic rehabilitation of individuals affected by drug addiction through yoga, meditation, gymnasium facilities, sports activities and skill development programmes aimed at helping them rebuild their lives and secure sustainable livelihoods.
He reiterated the need for sustained community participation and youth engagement to effectively combat the menace of drug abuse and strengthen efforts towards building a healthier and addiction-free society.
