Olympic medallist boxer Vijender Singh has questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the absence of any public message congratulating Indian athletes for their performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026, saying sporting achievements should unite the nation beyond political differences.
In a post on social media platform X, Vijender said that while Rahul Gandhi and the Congress frequently speak about the country’s youth, there had been no congratulatory message from the leader or the party acknowledging the achievements of Indian athletes at the Glasgow Games.
He urged political leaders to rise above partisan considerations when the country’s sportspersons bring glory to the nation, stating that boosting the morale of athletes is a collective responsibility.
The former boxer made the remarks as India concluded a successful campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with athletes delivering notable performances across multiple disciplines.
Vijender also praised the Indian boxing contingent for its historic outing, congratulating the team after it secured a record haul of 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver medals.
Calling the achievement a landmark moment for Indian boxing, he commended the athletes for their dedication, passion and commitment to representing the national flag with distinction.
India’s boxing campaign also saw Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain achieve a significant milestone by becoming only the third Indian boxer, after Vijender Singh and M.C. Mary Kom, to win medals at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
Vijender, who won India’s first Olympic boxing medal with a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, concluded his own career with one Olympic medal, three Commonwealth Games medals and two Asian Games medals.
India finished its 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign in fourth place on the overall medals table, securing 39 medals comprising 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze.
