PoK Election Allegations Raise Questions Over Pakistan’s Democratic Record

Tel Aviv, August 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Allegations of electoral irregularities in the recent legislative elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have renewed debate over democratic practices in Pakistan, with critics questioning what they describe as a pattern of political manipulation and limited accountability.

A report highlighted allegations by opposition parties of electoral malpractice, including claims of voter intimidation and arrests of political workers. It said the concern was not limited to any single incident but reflected what critics view as a recurring pattern that has weakened public confidence in the electoral process.

The report, citing Italian political advisor and geopolitical analyst Sergio Restelli in the Times of Israel, argued that Western governments have often criticised disputed elections in parts of South Asia but have maintained a different approach towards Pakistan due to strategic considerations.

“What that buys is a strategic exemption from accountability,” Restelli was quoted as saying, referring to what he described as a long-standing pattern of geopolitical priorities taking precedence over democratic concerns.

He pointed to Pakistan’s history of military influence, political instability and restrictions on democratic institutions, arguing that recent developments, including the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, pressure on opposition groups and concerns over media freedom, reflected continuing challenges.

According to the analysis, the situation in PoK should not be viewed as an isolated electoral controversy but as part of broader concerns about democratic space and political legitimacy.

The report also argued that disputed electoral processes in the region could affect Pakistan’s international position, particularly regarding its claims related to the wider Kashmir issue.

Restelli said Western countries should recognise that security partnerships and democratic accountability are not conflicting goals, and that ignoring electoral concerns could weaken international credibility.

The allegations regarding the PoK elections come amid continuing debate over political freedoms, institutional independence and electoral transparency in Pakistan.
